Synopsis:
ITHACA, a rock'n'roll play by LPFunk, is the story of an unconditional love triangle between three close friends living in New York City during the first decade of the 21st century. it is told through an eclectic and dynamic sonic landscape of guitar-driven music that echoes the changes that our city and our generation have encountered in the past decade. this music varies stylistically and in purpose; from NYC-style post punk indie rock, to blues & funk-inflected monster guitar jams straight out of a gritty new orleans bar, to classically-tinged guitar underscoring, to ethereal keltic and middle-eastern scales driven by power pop hooks, to straight-up heavy metal!
ITHACA is a study in Y2K compliance; the generation born between 1965-1979 (a.k.a., Generation X) is the last generation to grow up part-20th century "analog" style, and part-21st century "digital" style. we grew up listening to records and tapes, watching TV before cable, using rotary phones, and we can clearly remember what life was like before the internet. and then we freaked out about Y2K right before the turn of the milennium, which is basically where the story begins. my generation of artists, who came to New York in the late 90's boom-time economy, had to witness a rebirth in humility not only in themselves and in their own personal struggles and obstacles, but in the city's vastly changing landscape and money-driven culture. we witnessed not only the final stages of analog to digital, but also three of the biggest tragedies in our nation's history: 1) the 2000 election, worse than Watergate 2) 9/11 and 3) Hurricane Katrina. And if that wasn't enough, right in the middle of all of it, the Republicans have their national convention in New York City. the headline could have read-- BUSH TO CITY: FUCK YOU!!!
the underlying questions of ITHACA are: how do we overcome our fears and rediscover our sense of humility? is self-destruction inevitable not only in ourselves but in our society as a whole? how has trying to adjust to the rapid onset of the digital age affected us emotionally? and how can we learn collectively and as individuals to breathe more happily and stay in tune?
ITHACA will take you on a musical odyssey down a river of space and time, through a period of great change and high stakes. it will rock your world!
let's take a trip...
